Entry # 8 - Elements of Teaching
The elements of teaching are all crucial and vital in the teaching-learning process. It somehow define whether the student will learn or not. These elements cannot be present without each other, meaning they are codependent. There are basically five (5) elements in teaching, these are the teacher, learners, instructional materials, learning environment, and the professional behavior of the teacher.
First is the teacher, I will also tackle the professional behavior of the teacher which is another element here in this paragraph. The teacher was the center of the teaching-learning process, but that was way back. In today's time, the student is the center of the process, but I will tackle that later. Formerly, the teacher seems to be the source of all the knowledge, that he is the one and only provider. Now, the teacher is not just confined in teaching the same thing over and over again, he is also the classroom manager or facilitator that aids and supports the students. Coming alongside with that, is the professional behavior of the teacher, he must not only a master of the subject matter but he should also maintain professional relationship with his students. The students are his clients after all, technically speaking.
Next is the learner or the student, as mention it is now encouraged that the students should be the learning process. They should experience everything in order to firmly grasp the concepts and theories that the teacher provide in order for them to apply that in their everyday life. They are the clients of the teacher, but how you ask? Because they pay for their education, if not, the government is providing free education and pays the teacher to do their thing.
Third is the instructional materials used, this pertains about the the instruments used to reinforce and aid the learning process. Instructional materials may be the black board, a manila paper, PowerPoint presentations, realias, etc. but it is a saying that the best instructional material is the teacher.
Lastly is the learning environment, this pertains if the classroom is conducive for learning or not. Certain factors include the lighting of the room, ventilation, seating arrangement, school facilities, even down to the uniform. These are the things surrounding the students may them be tangible or not.
