Entry # 9 - 21st Century Teacher
What are the key characteristics of a 21st century teacher compared to a traditional teacher? Are they better than the traditional teachers? What are the qualifications to be one? In this blog I will be discussing five key characteristics of a 21st century teacher.
The first characteristic of a 21st century teacher is that he is a master of technology. 21st century living and technology come hand in hand. They should know for whom, what to use, when to use it, where to use it, and how to use it. Technology is not only tied to PowerPoint presentations, it is up to the teachers imagination.
The second characteristics of a 21st century teacher is that he should know how to collaborate. Collaborations inside the workplace are a must in order to more well-rounded and educated among other field of learning. This will help the teacher to understand different perspectives and angles in the teaching-learning process.
Third is that a teacher should be adaptive. Flexibility is imperative inside the classroom. Yes, lesson plans, DLLs, and other planned activities may help us while teaching but we cannot deny the fact that when inside the classroom we will encounter various problems. Teachers should prepare for the unexpected. As Malcolm X said, "The future belongs to those who prepare for it."
Fourth is that a 21st century teacher is a lifelong learner. Learning is not bound only inside the four corners of the classroom nor after the teacher graduates and passes the board exam. They should be good examples to their students and manifest lifelong curiosity and love of learning.
Last but not the least we have advocacy. 21st century teachers are advocates, they pay attention to what is happening in the academe and discusses them for the common good. On top of that they should be advocates of learning. They must incorporate new and innovative strategies.
Being a 21st century teacher doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be a fresh graduate teacher or a young one. It does not also focus on cutting edge and new technologies that are available. The true essence of a 21st century teacher boils down to their love of the students and education.
